On 29th of December 2020, I and 9 others started our 5-day trek to Mount Kenya up the Chogoria Park route, getting onto Lenana peak on the 1st of January 2021. It proved to be the most challenging travel experience I’ve ever had in my lifetime, but also the most rewarding ever!
Here is part 1 video of my Mount Kenya experience:
On summit day, everything that could go wrong went wrong but I still managed to conquer the mountain by God’s Grace. I was so beat by the time I got onto Lenana Peak.
My guide got altitude sickness while we were 3/4 way up.
We were hit by a severe blizzard of snowstorm followed by rains for all the 9 hours on the way up on summit night/day (we left base camp at 2:30am). It was so bad some summitters decided to abort their journey.
If Mount Kenya is on your bucketlist, my advice is that you do it now during this Covid period when international movements are restricted as it means you’ll be having less crowded spaces up there.
We were so fortunate to have the park to ourselves most times even though we were visiting during the High season.

Part 4: Key Tips to Increase Your Chances of Making it Up the to the Top at Lenana Peak
Climbing Mount Kenya to Lenana Peak can be a challenge to many. Your experience tells it all. It was not an easy trek but again with the will power, one is able to hit the summit at 4985m.
Chogoria route is indeed the most scenic trail up the mountain and without doubt offering the most magnificent views including the Nithi Falls, Lake Ellis, Lake Michaelson, Gorges Valley, The Billiards Table and more.
Thanks for sharing such an inspiring article – a good read!
Hiking before the New Years is quite a wonderful idea. Being away from city hustle sounds interesting 😊. I hope to visit Kenya one day and hike to the mountains.
