How to get a Kenyan passport?
For first-time applicants, visit the e-Citizen website: and sign up for an account.
On the e-Citizen website, you can apply for, renew or replace your passport and pay for it online.
After sign up, fill out the online application form, and then book your appointment and immigration office to submit biometrics and pay the passport fees using either mobile money, Credit, Debit Cards or via online banking from local Kenya banks.
Download and Print the three application receipts and the passport application form (remember to sign and date it.)
You will then need to book an appointment online on the e-citizen platform to submit your Kenya passport application to immigration.
Once you’re satisfied that all details are correct, sign and date the form then re-upload it back on the e-citizen website.
You then bring the aforementioned documents and photographs to Immigration Office Mombasa, Kisumu, or Nyayo House Nairobi for processing.
How to book an appointment on e-citizen for Kenya e-passport application
If you had already filled your application online before the online booking system came into fore, log back onto the e-citizen platform under immigration services and book your Kenya passport application submission appointment, to have your biometrics taken and to collect your new generation passport once ready.
If making a fresh application, once you have submitted all your personal details on the e-citizen platform, click the COMPLETE button to pay for your new generation Kenya passport and choose the date, time and immigration office you’d like to have your biometrics taken at.

What is needed to apply for a passport?
To apply for a Kenyan passport, you will need the following:
- An eCitizen pre-filled passport application form and three receipts.
- Original birth certificate and photocopy.
- Original National ID Card & copy.
- Three Current passport size photos.
- Recommender’s ID Card copy.
- Consent letter for minors.
- Old passport for replacement.
- The last, 2nd last, 3rd last, and 4th last pages of your old passport if you are renewing it.
- Parents National ID cards and copy.
Steps of applying for Kenyan Passport
- Register on www.ecitizen.go.ke
- Go to immigration.ecitizen.go.ke and click on the passport application form.
- Read the instructions and then carefully fill out the application form.
- Choose the date, time and immigration office you’d like to have your biometrics taken at + your preferred mode of payment and pay for the passport fees.
- Download and print the application form which at this point will have been automatically pre-populated with details you provided in above, the three application receipts, and your appointment slip generated from the e-citizen platform.
- Once you have confirmed that all details are correct, sign and date the form, and then upload it alongside your ID copy and that of your recommender .
- Submit the application form in person to the Immigration offices.( Nyayo house, Mombasa or Kisumu.)

For all other application types, it should take at least 10 working days to get your first passport once your form has been physically submitted at the Immigration offices.
For all other Kenya passport application types, it will take about 5 working days – give and take.
In reality though, it usually takes longer.
Unless you’re super lucky.
Or connected.
Sometimes, it can take longer if more information is required or you didn’t fill out your application correctly.
How long does it take for a Kenyan passport to expire?
It takes 10 years for the new generation Kenyan passport to expire.
Kindly note that to travel internationally, your Kenyan passport must be valid for six months or more from your intended date of travel.
Do you need an original birth certificate to get a passport?
Yes and No.
Yes, if you were born in Kenya.
No if you were born outside Kenya.
If you were born in the United States and do not have a birth certificate to submit with your Kenyan passport application, you may submit the Form DS-10.
Alternatively, you may submit a notarized Birth Affidavit, in person, along with Form DS-11 as proof of your U.S. citizenship.
What is a mutilated passport?
A mutilated passport is a passport that has:
- severe water damage;
- a loose, torn or detached cover;
- torn or missing pages; unauthorized markings;
- or holes in the cover or any pages.
A mutilated Kenyan passport is not valid for travel and must be replaced.
