To enjoy our 40s, many of us are looking for creative ways to make money. Some of us are looking to earn some extra money to splurge on travel, birthday celebrations, and a new wardrobe. Others envision new ways to survive the ever rising taxes.
Since money issues in Kenya are considered private and rarely talked about publicly, I wanted to open this up for discussion right here online. By sharing our own experiences with making money in Kenya in our 40s, I hope that we can inspire each other to take a first step towards bettering ourselves for the future.
First, I’ll share a few of my personal experiences. Then, we can continue the conversation in the comments below.
What I Learned About Making Money Online in Kenya
When I decided to quit my regular job in my early 30s, to start working online, I was scared. I wasn’t sure if I’d even get any money.
All I knew was that I wanted to make a little extra money to fund my travels while my savings from the previous job paid the bills.
So, I took a skills inventory and decided to offer my services as a freelance business plan writer on oDesk (now Upwork).
I was fortunate to land a gig within the first week of creating my profile.
Over the next couple years, I wrote business plans in various sectors from energy, to beauty, immigration, and chama investment plans.
Second, I learned that the world has so many problems that need to be solved, but there’s only one of you. It therefore is vital that you find the one solution you can give to the world using your key assets or underlying strengths. With my background in Accounting and interest in entrepreneurship, I managed to find a sweet spot in business plan writing and really enjoyed helping small businesses.
How Are You Making Extra Money in your 40s?
Over the last few years, I have evolved in how I make money.
Mostly I have taken advantage of the ubiquity of the internet, the opportunities opened up by the sharing economy, as well as my preference for a lifestyle with freedom to travel. I have rented out spare rooms on AirBnB, been a Nairobi based freelance writer, sold Maasai jewelry and African crafts on Etsy, flipped land and houses on Olx, and many other legal stuff.
I have also had the opportunity to talk with others in Kenya about how they are making money in Kenya.
