Kenyan passport holders can apply for a Djibouti Tourist Visa in one of the following three ways: in person at the Djibouti Embassy in Kenya, online for the Djibouti e-visa, or on arrival at Djibouti–Ambouli International Airport akaمطار جيبوتي الدولي in Arabic, aka Aéroport international Ambouli en Francais.
This guide gives you the information you need to apply for a Djibouti visa as a Kenyan living in Kenya.
In my experience, applying for the Djiboutian visa in Kenya proved to be actually pretty simpler and easier as compared to getting into Djibouti.
When I decided to visit Djibouti, I found very scanty information on the application process for a Djibouti visa.
Leave alone the Djibouti visa requirements for Kenya passport holders.
There was barely any information online.
So I found an e-mail address to which I sent to the Djibouti Embassy in Nairobi Kenya asking for the requirements.
But lo and behold when I got there, there were some additional requirements that I wasn’t privy to based on the information sent to me via e-mail.
I decided to apply for my Djibouti visa in person for two main reasons.
One, as I completed my online application for the Djibouti visa, at the point of payment, I soon learned that it would cost me US$60 if I just walked over to the Djibouti Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya located on the 2nd Floor of International Life House and lodged the application in person.
It costs US$90 to lodge your Djibouti visa application on arrival or and a whooping US$ 120 Djibouti e-visa unless you’re looking for a 1 to 3 day stay where the amount is US$60.
Besides, both the in person and online Djibouti visa applications take 48 hours to process.
The other reason I chose to go the in person route is because of the comfort and peace of mind just knowing that I have all my paper work ready before leaving home.
In the last few months, Djibouti has been famous for changing its visa application processes on a whim. I didn’t want to be caught off-guard.
Anyhow, here goes the Djibouti visa application requirements for Kenyans. The requirements are similar whether you’re applying for your Djibouti visa online, in person at the Djibouti Embassy in Kenya, or in person on arrival at the Djibouti–Ambouli International Airport.

Travel Tips:
- Please have the exact amount of you Djibouti Visa fees in US $ as the embassy or visa officer will not be responsible to give change or other claims.
- Unless you’re a diplomat, you must avail yourself in person if making the Djibouti visa application at the Embassy in Kenya.
- Please retain all your boarding passes. I was asked to show mine. So you never know.
- Other than the fact that it costs US$30 less to apply for the Djibouti visa at the embassy back home, it doesn’t grant you any privilege than those who have to get it on arrival. On arrival at Djibouti airport, I still had to go through the all same processes required of those applying for their Djibouti visa on arrival. I submitted my passport to the immigration officer who asked me one thousand and one questions, then asked me to wait as he handed over my passport to the back to another officer. The officer then sent the passport to a small room at the front of the immigration booth. Then back to the back officer. Then the back officer called me for further interviewing. I guess it also had a lot to do with the fact that I was visiting Djibouti for tourism and didn’t have a travel order which apparently is supposed to be written to you from Djibouti by someone vouching for you or something of the sorts. Anyhow, the officer eventually let me in.
- If you’re self-employed or a freelancer like myself, please carry your business card and copy of your business registration certificate. I hadn’t carried other. Fortunately for me my business in online so I simply asked the visa officer for his phone and opened my Etsy shop page. Lol! The things we do to gain entry into other people’s countries 🙂
